This is an absolutely beautiful oil portrait of a woman in profile with a large plumed hat, fancy velvet dress, and rose in her hand. The painting is very well done and is just gorgeous. It has a later gilded frame with black liner and measures 31" tall by 25.5" wide with the frame. The painting has some light pencil writing on the rear on the canvas that is difficult to make out - Presented to Wm O.Without frame signed upper left, Condition: area of loss lower right. Richard Creifelds, portrait and genre painter, was born in New York City in 1853. He studied art at the National Academy of Design and at the Royal Academy in Munich during the 1870s. Privately, Creifelds took lessons with Barth and Wagner. The artist exhibited in Brooklyn, at the Pennsylvania Academy, the National Academy and the Art Institute of Chicago in the late 19th century.
Creifelds passed away in 1939. Heavy craquelure to the dress, a flaked area lower right, and a few small flakes in the upper left corner. There are also markings left in the margins from the rabbet of the former frame.
This should all be visible in the photographs. UV reveals old varnish and no evidence of in-painting or restoration. The canvas is secure and taught.
