Still Life of Lilies, Tulips, Roses & Various Other Flowers In A Vase, 17th Century. Fine large 17th Century Flemish Old Master still life of various flowers & insects in a classical vase, oil on panel. Superb early and important study in exceptional condition of tulips, roses and lilies among other flowers surrounded by insects in a sculpted clay vase depicting Ceres and Amphitrite. The study is a complex allegory of earth, water, life and death with each flower and insect symbolic of the still life's underlying narrative. It is typical of the works produced by Brueghel during the period (exceptional bold detail and finishing using a bright palette) but as with most paintings from the period, is unsigned, and needing authentication. Good panel condition, one natural split - minor bowing, good clean surface on a light wood panel. Presented in a gilt frame. Measurements: 35" x 31.5" framed. Our paintings are carefully selected based on their quality, age, condition and historical importance. Surrey Fine Arts only sell original period/antique oil paintings.
