Antique Handel Reverse Painted Glue Chipped Ice Glass Lamp & Painted Roses

This beautiful all authentic antique Handel lamp came from an estate sale. It's a hard to find lamp, as rose-themed lamps tend to be well liked & don't come on the market often! I had it rewired by a professional with a twisted reproduction cord similar to what would have been on the lamp originally from the era.

I also had a new acorn plug, reminiscent of the original Bakelite plug put on the end of the cord, as the original plug had been replaced years ago unfortunately. But everything else on this lamp is authentic. Lamp from table to top of finial: 23-1/2. Base of lamp from point to point: 7-3/4. Lamp pull-chains with acorn ends: 8-3/4 long from socket to end.

Shade: 9" Long x 18-1/8" at widest part. The top opening is approx. The lamp is absolutely beautiful when lit as the hand painted roses glow. The shade has a muddled-effect, which is caused from the shade exterior being originally smeared with very strong glue made from animal hoof, then allowed to slowly dry and "chip" the glass, which is where we get the term glue chipped glass. " It's also referred to as "chipped ice when describing the finish. This chipping effect has caused it to have a very faint pattern of what appears to be a window with frosted ice-crystals on it. Just a beautiful effect with the roses shining through. The exterior glass appears to have a "yellow wash" that was applied to it.

It appears as if the shade started out as clear glass when molten, and then dipped in a very-thin layer of yellow glass, and then the shade blank was blown. So, when the glue was placed on the exterior of the shade and it "chipped" away, it chipped down to the clear glass below it. A very soothing and beautiful effect. The shade is in amazingly excellent condition!

I ran my fingernail all along the edge to find small or chirps along the edge, and FOUND NONE! Which is just amazing for a lamp of this age! The shade is marked with a stamped HANDEL PAT'D NO. 979664 on the top copper ring.

The base is also stamped HANDEL. Both markings can be seen in the pics. The glass shade is also marked with paint and states: HANDEL. The sockets are all original and labeled "250W HUBBELL 250V" and have their original acorn pulls. Each socket was reworked by my electrician but nothing was removed, so the parts are all original.

My electrician let me know that there's a "cardboard-like" mechanism inside the sockets that tends to wear out and should be replaced periodically. Given that this lamp is from around 1910-20, I figured after 100 years it was time to replace those parts.

You will not have to worry about this lamp needing updating or cord replacing for at least a decade! The electrician also replaced the "cardboard-like" sleeves that go around the housing where the bulb screws into. These also need to be replaced periodically b/c they were worn, and if that cardboard is missing it'll cause you to get shocked when operating the pulls to turn the lamp in, as it would have a "short" in it & cause electricity to flow through you as it sought to be grounded! Included with this lamp are 3 reproduction light bulbs from the Brooklyn Bulb Co.

They're all labeled "Bushwick Vintage Bulb" and are 120 V, 40 Watts. I like to display old lamps with bulbs of the era, as the Handel Co. Manufactured the lamps with those light-bulbs in mind, since those were what was available during the era, and so they give an "authentic" glow to the lamp the way it would have been back in the era. The lamp base is very heavy and substantial to be able to hold up the glass shade, and it appears to be bronze. It has a very nice patina of light and dark hews with gold accenting.

I don't know if this is the original look of the lamp, or if the base was entirely gold & it wore away as I only acquired this a few years ago. The cap at the top of the lamp that holds the shade is also original.

I want to make sure it arrives to you intact! I'm always happy to answer questions or provide more detailed pictures to interested buyers, so just ask me!
