ANTIQUE Chinese Famille Rose Ginger Jar Lid Hand Painted Celadon Rose
ANTIQUE Chinese Famille Rose Ginger Jar w/Lid Hand Painted Celadon Rose Yellow. Stunning Chinese ginger jar w/lid is a wonderful example of the famille rose ceramic technique. A lovely celadon/seafoam green base with various ornate and intricate decorations and pigment wash in varying shades of pink, rose, yellow, white and darker green. Trim around the lid appears to be a metallic gold. This is a beautiful piece to add to your Chinese collection or a perfect appointment to your design aesthetic. No marking on the underside. Size: 8-1/4" with lid, 7-1/2" w/o lid 6-1/2" across widest part of the jar'belly' 2-1/2" across the opening 3" across the base wood base 5" in diameter, 1-1/2 high. Condition: The vase itself is IMO in very good condition -- no apparent chips or repairs, no crazing, the rough spots seem to be from the kiln/firing/production process. The inside looks like it has some soil -- I didn't want to risk damaging it by washing it and my hand is too big to get inside. Sorry but I'll let you clean up. The lid looks like it has taken a tumble and was judging by the method, it was repaired years ago (paper/glue and touched up with gold) Based on the provenance, this ginger jar is well over 100 years old -- we should always look that good IMO just turn the break to the backside and you would never know... Classic, iconic, and possessing a real sense of history, ginger jars, are one of decors most well-known vessels. Originally conceived as storage containers in ancient China, they took on a more decorative function once they began to be imported to Europe during the 17th centurys fervor for all things chinoiserie.

Theyve managed to maintain their popular appeal throughout the years, and youll find them in all manner of designer homes and in countless magazine spreads. Famille rose (French for "pink family") is a type of Chinese porcelain was first introduced in the 18th century and defined by the presence of pink colour overglaze enamel.

It is a Western classification for Qing dynasty porcelain known in Chinese by various terms: fencai, ruancai, yangcai, and falangcai. The colour palette was introduced in China during the reign of Kangxi (16541722) by Western Jesuits who worked at the palace, but perfected only in the Yongzheng era when the finest pieces were made. Although famille rose is named after its pink coloured enamel, the colour may actually range from pale pink to deep ruby. Apart from pink, a range of other soft colour palettes are also used in famille rose.

The gradation of colours was produced by mixing coloured enamels with'glassy white', an opaque white enamel (lead arsenate), and its range of colour was further extended by mixing different colours. Famille rose was popular in the 18th and 19th century, and it continued to be made in the 20th century. Large quantity of famille rose porcelain were exported to Europe, United States and other countries, and many of these export wares were Jingdezhen porcelain decorated in Canton.
